Cyber security experts needed but good grades are a must

If a company even hopes to be prepared for the inevitable cyberattack they’ll need an experienced I-T specialist, but there’s a big shortage of those across North America.

So what does it take to become one?

Dr. Ken Barker, a professor of computer sciences at the University of Calgary, told 660 NEWS start with a computer science or software engineering degree and then specialize in areas like cybersecurity or privacy.

Barker says most university computer science programs are full so if you’re interested in that field, good grades are essential.

He says most computer science graduates have jobs waiting for them and it’s estimated there will be nearly two million open positions around the world by 2020.

The U of C admits about 200 students per year.
