Exercise prolongs life of prostate cancer patients: study

Researchers say working out is helping prostate cancer patients live longer.

An Alberta Health Services study spanning 17 years and tracking 800 patients found men who exercise after a diagnosis significantly lower their risk of dying from the disease.

Dr. Christine Friedenreich says a brisk walk is enough.

“The levels of activity were about, the highest level was 26 meta hours per week, per year, which translates to 30-60 minutes of moderate intensity walking per day which isn’t a very high level of exercise which makes it something most people would be able to attain,” she says.

Dr. Friedenreich says more intense workouts can increase survival by up to 30 per cent.

About 2,200 men in Alberta are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year.
