Hospice Calgary takes first step towards fundraising walk

Organizers with “Be a Hero for Hospice” are hoping Calgarians will step up to help grieving families and those coping with life-threatening illness.

They’re holding a walk on Sunday May 1 at Fish Creek Provincial Park to raise funds.

“Hospice Calgary is an organization that’s funded really at a grassroots level for our Sage Centre in particular. Having donations and support from the community is really what keeps our programs going,” said Executive Director Sarah Walker.

The group held a kick-off event Monday, alongside General Manager John Hufnagel and Rob Cote of the Calgary Stampeders. They’re encouraging people to give what they can, knowing money is slim and donations are down during the economic downturn.

“One of the things that is really helpful about something like a hike is that we’re not asking people for large amounts of money. We’re asking people to get out there and pledge support,” said Walker.
