Film festival tackles racism

They used creativity to stand up to discrimination.

Calgarians are being invited to take in the first 48-Hour Anti-Racism Film Festival on Monday.

Teams of storytellers met at the University of Calgary back in February to make two to five minute long pieces tackling the tough subject, some using professional cameras, others recording on just their iPhones.

David Hohol from the Calgary Immigrant Education Society says this is an important dialogue to start.

He’s noticed an uptick in prejudice since refugees started to come to Canada.

“It’s been a bit disturbing to me, and I look to the south and I see what’s happening down there with Trump, normalizing racist, misogynist, hate speech one day, and then the next day he’s on Good Morning America,” he said.

The screening happens at the John Dutton Theatre Monday at 6 p.m.

You can reserve tickets here, but admission is free.
