Alberta signs low-carbon agreement with UK

The Alberta government is taking another step towards fighting climate change, as they sign a low-carbon agreement with the UK.

Energy Minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd met with British High Commissioner Howard Drake Tuesday morning at the Telus Convention Centre in Calgary.

While they also hope it will drive economic growth in the province, it’s hard to measure just how much impact it will have.

The framework partners Alberta stakeholders with counterparts in the UK, promising to reduce greenhouse gases, through innovation and diversification in the energy industry.

A big area of focus is renewables.

McCuaig-Boyd says the hope is to attract investors to the two jurisdictions.

“As we look together on possibilities, hopefully there will be areas of interest together where there’s investment or collaboration — that will turn into jobs, can’t specify today, but I’m sure it will,” she said.

However, Drake says it’s merely a stepping stone.

“It specifies certain areas where there are particularly fruitful avenues for us, obviously what the government can do is set the framework for things to happen, and that’s what we’re trying to do,” he said.

He says they have their work cut out for them to fuel economic growth on both sides of the pond.

“Part of that is, as indeed in all other sectors of our energy markets, is making the environment as attractive as possible to investors,” he said.

There are plans to re-visit the document a year from now.
