Should you be ‘dumbing down’ your resume?

Many Calgarians looking for work may feel they have too much experience on their resume.

One consulting company suggests you take off some experience if it’s not applicable.

Koula Vasilopolous is a district president for Robert Half International and says it’s probably a good idea to dust things off, and really focus on the specifics of the job you’re applying for.

“Some people feel like ‘maybe my skills don’t apply to the job, so I’m going to simplify my resume’ and I would actually argue you really want to hone in on the skills you have that apply to the position itself,” Vasilopolous explained.

She says that may mean taking things off and even make things more simple.

“I would say, just make sure that you’ve got a variety of versions of your resume ready,” Vasilopolous explained. “Make sure that it’s clear, it’s concise, try to keep it to two pages.”

“It’s just important that you really highlight some of the things you’re bringing to the table that can add value to the role and to the company.”

Vasilopolous says also make sure there is something that makes your resume jump out from the rest of the applicants.

“Everybody has something that can they add to a company in terms of their background experience. Just sometimes, you have to dig deep and so thinking about that and preparing your resume will help you really get considered more often.”

She added that patience is key, and other industries besides the energy sector are looking for qualified employees.
