Political pundits weigh in ahead of Tuesday’s throne speech

Alberta’s NDP launches the spring session of the legislature Tuesday afternoon with a fresh new throne speech.
It comes just nine months after its last throne speech following the party’s ascent to the political throne last spring.
Mount Royal University Professor of Policy Studies Lori Williams isn’t surprised there’s a new throne speech. She says the NDP’s first speech was largely already determined by priorities laid out by the previous ruling Conservatives.
“The entire session will be entirely the NDP government’s, of course within the very strict parameter of the economic downturn that they’re dealing with, it will be truly their own,” said Williams.
Stephen Carter was a top aide to Premier Alison Redford and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.
He says Premier Rachel Notley has been hit with the hard realities of governing during an economic downturn and that’s forced her hand.
He believes tax increases or service cuts are likely to be announced in the throne speech but there may also be a “goodie” revealed; a policy most will consider positive to draw some attention away from the negative.
