VIDEO: The Messenger issues an ecological warning in Calgary

Here’s a chance to see some amazing footage of songbirds in slow motion. A Canadian documentary kicks off its western theatrical release in Calgary Friday, March 4, at the Globe Cinema downtown.

Filmmaker Su Rynard tells 660 NEWS, The Messenger takes an in-depth look at a troubling trend. “Birds are disappearing all around the world,” she said. “And the rate at which they are disappearing is greater than any other time in human history.”

The documentary features slow motion footage captured using a wind tunnel at a university in London, Ontario.

“We brought in a high speed camera, which makes an image appear in slow motion. We filmed some beautiful sequences of the song birds in flight, which is quite remarkable to watch,” says Rynard.

They also visited the boreal forest in northern Alberta; the nesting place for many species of song birds.

The Messenger is nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for best cinematography.
