Flowers popping up early in Calgary

Flowers in February?

They may not be in bloom yet, but people are seeing their spring bulbs start to come up already, because it’s been so warm for weeks in Calgary.

Olivia Johns, a horticulturist with Bluegrass Garden Centre tells 660 NEWS, we saw similar conditions last year, so this could continue, but it’s still too early to get into the garden.

“What I’d highly recommend is any leaf litter, garden litter that’s still there, just keep it there. Don’t start pulling it out yet, it’s a little bit too early. We want to keep that little warm blanket for all of our emerging perennials and bulbs,” she said.

Johns says one concern right now, is how dry it is.

She recommends, if the soil looks parched around perennials or trees, give them a good soaking, but don’t water regularly because that might cause them to bloom too soon.
