Passenger train between Calgary and Lake Louise could return

It may become easier to get to the mountain parks in the near future.

Banff Council put a request forward Monday to conduct a feasibility study on re-instating passenger rail from Calgary to Lake Louise.

Diana Waltman manager of communications for the town of Banff tells 660 News more people are coming to the mountain parks.

“it’s an alternative way for visitors to get here, we’re already experiencing increase in visitation over the last two years…this past season Parks Canada has announced visitation to the park was around 3.8 million that’s up 7 percent, the year before it was up ten percent.”

Diana Waltman says they want people to come and enjoy the parks without having to worry about traffic congestion.

The council will find out if they will get money from the Alberta government to conduct the study next month.

VIA Rail previously ran a passenger train to the mountains called ‘The Canadian’ but stopped in 1990.
