Thousands of tickets handed out to speeders

It’s a good bet that law enforcement will never become a paperless business.

Traffic Sgt. Paul Stacey told 660 NEWS, last year, Calgary police issues almost 371,000 speeding tickets, about a third of which were to drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h. That’s equal to more than 1,000 tickets per day on average.

“Three-hundred-and-twenty-thousand of them were from automated enforcement, which are speed on green and photo radar, and 51,000 was from our manned enforcement,” Stacey said.

He added, while that number might seem high, when the number of vehicles on the road and trips made are taken into account, it’s actually not that staggering, and tickets are mostly handed out in the name of safety.

“Those people who are speeding are a hazard, so we are there to address their behaviour so they aren’t impacting the safety of everybody else.”

Stacey said there are a number of reasons why people speed, ranging from road design to good weather. There are also those who believe the rules don’t apply to them.
