United Way pulls in nearly $60 million in 2015 despite downturn

Last year was a lean year for many Albertans and 2016 is shaping up to be difficult as well.

It’s meant more people have had to use services, like the ones provided by the United Way Calgary, which announced its campaign achievement for 2015.

Contributions were down, but it could have been worse.

The United Way raised $55.2 million in what president and CEO Lucy Miller called a tough economic environment.

“I think it really speaks to the generosity and the culture we have in corporate Calgary,” Miller said. “Really a testament to the hearts and the hands and the minds of Calgarians and their commitment to caring for those around them.”

However, that’s still well below the 2014 total of $59.7 million, as well as that year’s goal of $57.9 million.

“Times were much better last year and actually going into campaign last year, we had a couple of million-dollar gifts that were dedicated towards a specific initiative,” Milled added. “So going into campaign this year, we were ahead.”

“Our job at United Way this year will be to call on all Calgarians to work with us again to make sure we meet the needs of the people in our community who need us,” she said.
