Woman hit and killed in NW crosswalk

A woman in her 60s is dead after being hit while crossing a busy street in the north.

It happened around 6:45 p.m. Monday evening at Centre Street and 18th Avenue.

When they arrived, paramedics rushed a seriously injured woman to Foothills hospital, where she later died.

“A 66-year-old female was travelling across Centre Street when she was struck by a vehicle heading south bound on Centre Street,” said Sgt. Dave Dentandt, with the Calgary Police Traffic Unit.

Witnesses tell police the crosswalk’s flashing overhead lights were working at the time of the crash.

Dentandt says the driver, a man in his 70s, remained at the scene and is cooperating with police, and drugs and alcohol are not considered factors.

Investigators say charges are pending against the man.

The woman’s death is likely to spark more debate about pedestrian safety in the city.

Council recently looked at a pedestrian strategy, lowering the speed limit in residential zones, and adding more safety infrastructure, but it was sent back to the committee level until April.
