Council delays protested Chinatown project until April

A controversial land-use amendment in Chinatown has been put on councils back burner, amidst protest from the local community.

Those opposing the 30 storey building set to be constructed on 3rd Avenue say they have not been consulted enough and are concerned the project may visually split up the neighbourhood’s Asian motif.

Council chambers were packed Monday morning, as Druh Farrell asked for the matter to be pushed back to April.

“Two months would give the opportunity for the applicant to start building some trust within the community and to find a way to move forward together,” she said.

Calgary’s Planning General Manager Rollin Stanley says they’d like to work with the developer in consultations, to hear what those neighbouring the project have to say.

“There’s a lot of parties to bring into the fold, so, we’ll be a little pressed for time in two months, but we’ll see what we can get doing, and help co-ordinate that,” he said.
