Employee tackles suspect after Beltline robbery

A store employee helped take down a robbery suspect in Calgary’s Beltline Saturday night.

The thief is believed to be linked to other incidents.

It was lucky for the employee but not so great for the thief that police just happened to be driving by right after the store was robbed at around 10:30 p.m.

Duty Inspector Jason Bobrowich told 660 NEWS the suspect was armed with some sort of edged weapon and the staff member suffered a superficial injury.

While the employee did help, he said police never recommend staff try to apprehend a thief.

“There’s too many inherent risks in that because they don’t know the demeanor of the offender or potentially if they have weapons on them. It’s a decision that comes down to a personal level but as law enforcement officers would recommend for staff members not to physically intervene,” says Bobrowich.

Police found a stolen vehicle nearby with stolen items inside, believed to be linked to the suspect.

Charges are pending.
