Fraser Institute ranks Alberta premiers Redford, Notley poorly

It’s not a good look for Alberta.

The Fraser Institute is out with its latest fiscal report card for premiers in the country.

The latest data is for Alison Redford, who did not finish well, but the institute isn’t giving a glowing early review for Premier Notley either.

Alison Redford finished 7th in the report, only ahead of the three maritime premiers and just behind Ontario’s Kathleen Wynne.

Charles Lammam helped author the report.

He says the only thing Redford did well was hold the line on taxes, which is why he’s not too keen on how Notley will grade out once her numbers start rolling in.

“If this is the only area where the former premier did well, we know that the current government has eliminated that. I would expect Alberta to either stay in the bottom half of the rankings or fall even further,” he said.

He says rather than raising personal and business taxes, Notley should consider a sales tax as that has been proven to be less damaging to a struggling economy.

As for the best premiers in the country, BC’s Christie Clark leads the way followed by Quebec’s Philippe Coulliard and Saskatchewan’s Brad Wall.
