Dennis Wideman suspended indefinitely after hitting linesman

The National Hockey League has suspended a Calgary Flames defenceman indefinitely following a hit on a linesman.

In Wednesday night’s Flames vs. Nashville Predators game, Flames defenceman Dennis Wideman hit linesman Don Henderson from behind.

Wideman called the hit an accident, but many people have taken to social media, saying there is no way it could have been accidental.

Rob Kerr with Sportsnet 960 The Fan (link: ) told 660 NEWS the league needed to do something.

“I don’t believe it was premeditated, but on the same token, you can’t do it. There’s zero tolerance,” he said. “I think you just leave it within the schedule that’s in the rulebook. (Whether) It’s three games, it’s ten games. But you’ve got to punish.”

Some sports insiders are predicting a lengthier suspension, of 10-to-25 games.

The suspension is waiting on a hearing, which will take place after the NHL All-Star game.

There were reports that Henderson spent time in hospital, but has since been released.

His family says he is suffering from a concussion.
