Barter business is booming in economic slump

While budgets are getting tighter, more Calgary businesses are looking for alternative ways to save a buck.

Calgary bosses are warming up to eXmerce’s barter system. Instead of other barters systems that trade products or services directly, members sign up to earn Trade dollars which they use as currency.

“Businesses are certainly looking for ways to conserve their cash flow and reach out to new customers in a slowing economy,” Nelson Liem, president of eXmerce, said. “I would say for the start of January, we’ve literally signed up a business a day.”

Members pay exactly the same amount for the offered goods and services as they would in the cash world. In turn, they use the currency to buy hundreds of projects or services. Liem said it helps attract new clients, save money and keep companies active by driving new business their way.
