Sport Calgary watching CalgaryNEXT from the sidelines, for now

The debate over the massive CalgaryNEXT arena, football stadium, fieldhouse project, really heated up this week when the NHL commissioner was in town.

So what does Sport Calgary think?

Murray Sigler is with the umbrella organization for several amateur sport groups in the city.

He was on Sportsnet 960 The Fan with Rob Kerr. Sigler said the mayor and city council are right to be cautious and ask lots of questions.

“Our job is to help them answer those on behalf of amateur sport,” he said. “So, we’ll be looking at the CalgaryNEXT proposal in term of the actual ammenities it provides. That’s the direct question, what are the amenities?”

He added, they will also look at accessibility and affordability. “Will there be parking? Will there be times that it’s open for use by amateur sport?”

Sigler said a new field house is desperately needed in this city. He said they will be getting input from all their member organizations before deciding if they support CalgaryNEXT.
