Calgary Police to launch cycletrack enforcement projects

So far, it’s been friendly reminders and regular patrols for the most part in order to help get drivers and cyclists alike to get used to downtown Calgary’s new cycle track.

However, police expect to be launching some specific projects for enforcement this spring.

Acting Staff Sergeant Katrina O’Reilly is happy with how it’s been going so far, but has a message for cyclists.

“You have to follow the rules of the road, just like a motor vehicle, so the same rules apply. You stop at red lights, you stop at cross walks for pedestrians, at stop signs, etc.,” explained O’Reilly.

And if you don’t?

“You could also be fined under the Traffic Safety Act, which would go onto your driving record and your license records.”

As for drivers, she urges them to be patient and recognize there are some new rules of the road to follow with the cycle track changes, including yielding to cyclists who have the right of way at certain intersections.

As well, in many cases you can no longer turn left on a red light if you’re next to a cycle track.
