Martindale residents left in the dark due to cable fault

Residents in the northeast community of Martindale spent a short time in the dark Thursday evening as Enmax crews worked to put the lights back on.

Enmax spokesperson Doris Kaufmann Woodcock told 660 NEWS the issue was caused by an underground cable fault.

“A lot of the cables in that area are underground, and the insulation that covers the cables overtime can degrade, and that can actually be impacted by cold weather, or alternatively, even hot weather as well,” Woodcock said.

She added, this kind of outage could happen again, in other parts of the city.

“There are a lot of areas in the city that have their cables underground,” Woodcock said. “That said, the insulation on those cables really is intended to withstand a fairly long period, a 30-year period, or even more at times.”

Around 1,000 people were affected by the outage, which lasted for about an hour and a half.
