‘Tis the season for the winter blues

Those feeling a bit blue lately can blame the sun, or lack thereof.

University of Calgary Psychologist Dr. Keith Dobson says those who suffer depressive episodes are more susceptible this time of year.

“This psychological effect has to do with the length of the day and the amount of contact the eye has with bright light, this is obviously shorter as the day gets shorter, this can have a psychological effect for sure,” he said.

He says people also tend to spend less time among others, and being active during the winter as well which can affect mood.

Dobson’s suggestion: look for artificial light sources to replace the lack of sun, and ensure your schedule includes social and physical activities.
