Local retailers prepare for Black Friday blitz

Local retailers are hoping people are ready to start shopping for the gifts on that list this Friday.

With only one month until Christmas, the slumping economy in Calgary has put the pressure on to get consumers spending this holiday season.

At CrossIron Mills, general manager James Moller said the mall has a whole series of events planned for Black Friday, and they’re bringing in extra personnel expecting large crowds.

“We’ve contracted extra security for that day, inside and outside. We’ve got traffic control as well and we’ve also partnered with RockyView County and we’re getting some off-duty police officers just to help direct traffic out of the traffic lights.”

At CF Chinook Centre, Paige O’Neill, general manager, said it’s launching the holiday shopping season this Friday.

“The discounting from there seems to continue all the way through to the end of January, at least. So, there will be some pretty good sales for people to take advantage of.”
