‘Sylvia’ joins ‘Dames at Sea’ on the Broadway scrap heap; both closing Jan. 3

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Two Broadway shows will close just as your New Year’s Eve hangover is subsiding.

The play “Sylvia” starring Matthew Broderick, and the musical “Dames at Sea” both have announced they will end their runs on Jan. 3. Each has struggled at the box office.

A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia,” about a dog who seduces the attentions and affection of a well-to-do husband, last week pulled in only $317,033 from a potential of $911,820. Performances started Oct. 2.

“Dames at Sea,” a fizzy celebration of Busby Berkeley films and Cole Porter musicals, did even more poorly — earning just $127,071 from a $556,860 potential haul. It started Sept. 24
