Alberta food bank numbers on the rise

Alberta is seeing a big jump in people turning to food banks.

The HungerCount report found 67,443 people in the province received food from a food bank in March, a 23.4 per cent increase from the year before.

Forty one per cent of those people were children, and one third of households helped were working.

Food Banks Canada Executive Director Katharine Schmidt says it is likely the ripple effect of a decline in the price of oil on the Alberta economy.

The report also finds the number of people using these services across the country is on the rise just one year after numbers declined.
