Victorian Diet could help you live longer

Forget eating like a caveman — the next diet fad could be the lesser known Victorian Diet.

Two British researchers say the years 1850 to 1872 were a golden age of nutrition in the UK, when people were healthier and had stronger immune systems, despite eating up to 5,000 calories a day.

The researchers say that’s because they ate more vegetables than we do today, along with wholemeal bread containing yeast, weaker alcohol, and less sugar.

They also consumed lots of watercress, onions, cabbage, artichokes, beets, apples, cherries and small amounts of meat.

The author of the study published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine says a return to this kind of diet, as well as strenuous exercise, could help us stay healthy into old age.
