Charges upgraded in Stampede stabbing after victim dies in hospital

A 20-year-old man originally charged in connection with a stabbing during the 2015 Calgary Stampede has had his charges upgraded to manslaughter after one of the victims died as a result of the injuries.

Police responded to the Stampede grounds around midnight on July 9 after hearing reports of a fight.

When they arrived, police say there were two people suffering from stab wounds.

One person was sent to hospital in critical condition, while the other was later released.

A third person was also found with stab wound, after a foot chase by police.

Police say that third person is believed to be responsible for stabbing the person that was in critical condition.

25-year-old Zakariya Mohamed Abdow reportedly died last month from those injuries.

Rinato Toy was originally charged with one count of aggravated assault among other charges.

The number of homicides in Calgary now stands at 27.
