Students’ Union suing the University of Calgary

After failed negotiations and open letters, the University of Calgary Students’ Union is taking the school to court.

It served a lawsuit today over ownership of MacEwan Hall, home to the library, cafeteria and other facilities on campus.

The union claims 55 per cent ownership of the building, and cites the original 1969 building agreement. But according to a university publication, the school is standing behind a 1999 operating agreement that identifies it as the sole owner.

Officials released the following statement from Dru Marshall, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and lead negotiator for the university:

“The University of Calgary is extremely disappointed that the Students’ Union served the university with a lawsuit claiming ownership of Mac Hall on October 21, 2015. The university’s priority has always been to create a great experience for all students on campus and we want Mac Hall to continue to be a focal point of that experience. The university will provide no further comment while the matter is before the courts.”

University of Calgary officials have 20 days to file a statement of defence in court.
