Students’ Union stands behind lawsuit against University of Calgary

It’s a last resort for the University of Calgary Students’ Union, which is suing the school over who owns MacEwan Hall.

The two sides were negotiating for about two years before the union served officials with a lawsuit Wednesday.

President Levi Nilson says it’s a focal point for students, and a big source of revenue for the union. He says the university needs to follow its own lessons.

“I kind of would expect better of the university to go around claiming they have all this evidence and all this proof, and then never show anybody. You know one of my friends said that if I didn’t produce any of the sources on my papers I’d consistently get F’s,” says Nilson.

He points to agreements and letters dating back to the 1960s, that show the union’s share of the facility. School officials have 20 days to file a defence claim in court. While officials said in a statement they’re disappointed with the lawsuit, they won’t comment while it’s before the courts.
