Toronto Blue Jays play Game 5 under protest after controversial call

The Toronto Blue Jays are playing Game 5 of the American League Division Series under protest after the umpires ruled that a go-ahead run would count after a botched throw back to the mound.

After Toronto catcher Russell Martin caught a pitch with two out in the seventh inning, he attempted to throw the ball back to pitcher Aaron Sanchez.

The ball struck the bat of Shin Soo-Choo, who was standing in the batter’s box and had his arm extended and bat upright.

When the ball rolled down the third-base line, Roughned Odor scampered home to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead.

Many thought the play would be ruled dead, but home-plate umpire Dale Scott conferred with his crew and the run scored.

Fans responded by throwing garbage and cups on to the field.

Toronto manager John Gibbons argued with Scott and the play was eventually reviewed.

However, the call stood and play resumed after a delay of about 10 minutes.
