Plans to vacation in Cuba? Book now, prices are going up

With the thawing of relations between Cuba and the United States, Canadians are being urged to book trips to the Caribbean nation sooner than later.

The lack of competition from the U.S. has kept prices low, but all that is about to change.

Allison Wallace with Flight Centre said prices have started to go up.

“It’s already, as of this month, gotten expensive because they’re now accepting payment in U.S. dollars. So just with the foreign currency exchange, we’ve seen a more than 20% increase, but it’s also going to get more expensive as soon as they open up that tourism embargo in the United States,” said Wallace.

Wallace can’t say when the embargo will be lifted, but she noted charter flights from the U.S. are already being booked, while cruise ship operators have started to add Cuba to their itineraries.
