Warm weather greets Calgarians heading into long weekend

It’s the time of year it’s OK to be a bit of a turkey, as long as you don’t end up on the carving board.

Whether you’re staying at home or heading out of town, you should be greeted by a sunny sky and warm temperatures to start the long weekend.

Meteorologist David Spence said temperatures above 20 degrees should be around for Friday and Saturday anywhere within a day’s drive of Calgary, adding it’s been a bit of weird fall so far.

“We haven’t had our killing frost yet, usually that comes in mid-September and here we are almost in mid-October and that hasn’t happened yet which isn’t necessarily a bad thing,” he explained. “It’s a good thing for anybody still working the fields, I noticed last weekend there were still some combines out in the fields in central Alberta so if that work still needs to be done this will be a good weekend for it.”

You can take advantage of the great weather to get in one more round at the Lakeview or McCall Lake golf courses which close Thanksgiving Day.

If you hate the outdoors, the city has free public swimming at select pools Monday and free public skating at select arenas between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., also on Monday

Of course there are the usual holiday closures, including the Max Bell, Bauer/Bush and Stew Hendry Arenas as well as the Calgary Soccer Centre. The Nature Centre at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is closed Thanksgiving Day and so are the North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Arts Centres.

Transit users should remember that from Saturday through Monday, shuttle buses will replace CTrain service between Victoria Park/Stampede and Chinook stations. But there’s good news for drivers: on-street parking is free Monday.
