Alberta government delays 101 school projects

The province’s education minister has announced major delays in the construction of new schools.

David Eggen says 101 new school and modernization projects, due to be complete starting September 2016, have been put on ice.

He says it has become painfully clear through the development of our school capital plan that the previous government was not being clear with Alberta families about timelines and funding required to complete these projects.

“As the new minister responsible and as a parent, I’m extremely disappointed to learn that many of the schools our province desperately needs will not open on time,” he said.

Eggen says, the Auditor General has agreed to look into the delays and provide advice to the new government on how to do better in the future.

Fifteen new schools, seven modernizations and one replacement school in Calgary are among those being pushed back.
