Breast Health Month encourages women to get screened

Thursday marks the start of Breast Health Month, a time when women are being encouraged to get a check-up.

According to statistics, one in nine Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer some time in their lives.

Dr. Illya Boridy is with RCA Diagnostics, which provides preventative screenings in Alberta.

He told 660 NEWS, it’s recommended that women begin getting screenings at the age of 40.

“Between the ages of 40 and 49, if a woman, after a consultation with the primary care physician, chooses to get screening, screening is recommended every year,” Dr. Boridy said. “And then between the ages of 50 and 74, screening is recommended every two years,”

It’s estimated there will be 2,300 new cases of breast cancer in Alberta this year.
