Flames blueliner T.J. Brodie sidelined with hand injury

Calgary Flames defenceman T.J. Brodie is expected to miss three to six weeks after suffering a broken bone in his right hand.

The 25-year-old said it happened in Monday’s pre-season game against the Edmonton Oilers.

“It was a one-timer from the point and there was traffic, so I didn’t see the puck,” Brodie told the media on Wednesday morning. “It just caught me right where I hold my knob on the opposite. It just pinched.”

Flames general manager Brad Treliving confirmed Brodie doesn’t need surgery.

“It’s not displaced,” Treliving explained. “We’ll get him one the mend as soon as possible.”

Brodie logged significant minutes for Calgary in the 2015 playoffs after an injury to captain Mark Giordano. He also had five points in 11 post-season games.

The absence of Brodie will open up a spot on the blueline because Ladislav Smid will not be ready for the start of the season because of a neck injury. Defenders Douglas Murray, Aaron Johnson and Ryan Wilson are currently with the team on professional tryouts.

The Flames open their regular season schedule at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Oct. 7 when they welcome the Vancouver Canucks.
