Syrian refugee rally draws crowd of 150

The global grief over the drowning of little Syrian refugee Alan Kurdi prompted an emergency rally in Calgary, which drew a crowd of about 150 people outside of City Hall Friday evening.

Saimi Jamal organized the demonstration.

“We’re all coming together to basically bring attention that our government needs to start working with the European government to take more refugees,” Jamal said. “We need to let them in, we need to make our compassion, our humanity shine.”

Jamal said bombing Syria to save Syrians is not working and with winter coming, the refugee crisis could get even worse.

She also had a message for Canadians who believe we should not open our doors to more refugees.

“Look deep into your heart. Look at these pictures of these corpses of dead children floating on the shore,” Jamal said. “We cannot just say that this in not our responsibility. It is everyone’s responsibility to respond right now. This is the worst kind of humanitarian crisis happening, and we as Canadians cannot ignore it and not do anything.”
