Group urges CBE to reconsider bus stop changes

Pressure is mounting on the Calgary Board of Education over a new busing policy.

A group that represents 72 school councils in the city is strongly opposing the removal of several bus stops in favour of larger pick up sites, many often well outside reasonable walking distance, especially for young children.

They’re also hoping to garner 3,000 signatures in a petition, asking the board to “Restore Safe and Reliable Transportation for Calgary Students.”

Lisa Davis, President of the Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils, tells 660 NEWS, the board should have changed its course before the start of the school year.

“After the NDP restored funding cuts, we were told that this decision might be reversed. The funding cuts were restored, and this decision didn’t change. So, it’s important that the minister understands what’s happening in Calgary, particularly with the funding,” she said.

Davis is meeting with the CBE Thursday morning, to urge them to re-consider the changes.

“We are in a position where the CBE has interfered with families’ ability to get to work, and with their ability to get their kids to school safely,” she said.
