Trans Canada Highway detour to open in NW Calgary

The days of construction delays on the Trans Canada Highway in Calgary’s west end are behind us.

The detour project near Canada Olympic Park is near completion and all vehicle traffic will be able to travel the new route beginning Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015.

For several weeks, both mountain-bound and city-destined motorists have maneuvered construction cones and crews while the temporary route was built. The new six-lane detour runs beside Highway 1 (16th Avenue NW) and Bowfort Road. It is expected to be in place for 15 months, while the new Trans Canada interchange is constructed.

The speed limit will be reduced to 50 km/hr on the detour.

Access to both Bowfort Road, north of the TCH and Canada Olympic Park will be maintained.

Excavation will start immediately on the TCH in preparation for bridge construction scheduled for fall and winter.

The end product is poised to be a free-flowing, six-lane thruway on 16th Avenue NW (TCH) which will run under a new bridge at Bowfort Road. The plan includes dual left turn lanes in all directions and two through lanes in both directions on Bowfort Road.

The interchange project is scheduled for completion in late 2016, with landscaping finished by the end of summer 2017.

The City of Calgary says the work is being down to promote a safe and effective transportation network that supports and serves the surrounding recreation options, business endeavours and communities, as well as the city at large.
