Faulty analyzer leads to wacky numbers measuring Air Healthy Quality Index

The Air Health Quality Index sat at Level 5 as of 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon, which is much lower than what we were experiencing earlier this week.

But we may have found out why, as one of the readers that measures air quality was faulty, inflating the numbers for Calgary.

Mandeep Dhaliwal, air quality program manager with the Calgary Region Airshed Zone said the broken reader led to some confusion.

“Some people are looking at today’s predicition of AHQI, now those numbers are incorrect, because they’re taking in the previous data into the calculation to predict what is going to come up,” Dhaliwal said, “Those numbers are based on the very high readings that came out last night (Wednesday) from the faulty analyzer.”

Meterologist David Spence recommends making sure residents check the numbers from Alberta Environment, which shows the correct index, as other sites may still be inflated.

Dhaliwal said to make sure you monitor the hourly number, instead of the future forecast.
