Flames ink captain Giordano to 6-year, $40.5M extension

The Calgary Flames have locked up defenceman Mark Giordano with a six-year contract extension.

The deal is worth $40.5 million and he’ll make $6.75 million per season.

Rob Kerr from Sportsnet 960 said the deal makes sense for everyone involved.

“The dollar figure is going to surprise a lot of people,” he explained. “I think a lot of people expected Giordano to be aiming for the fences and hit a home run. This is a very positive deal.”

The contract makes Giordano the ninth highest paid blueliner in the NHL.

The Flames’ captain is expected to be ready for the start of training camp after suffering a season-ending injury in February. Although he wasn’t on the ice for Calgary’s post-season run, he was very involved with the group.

“The captain, in this case, is so critical to where the Flames find themselves,” Kerr said. “The youth plays a role, the coach plays a role, there’s no doubt about it. But, the man who blends it all together — and it’s been quite obvious since he’s taken over as captain — has been Mark Giordano. He runs that locker room. He is the identity of this team.”

Giordano has played his entire NHL career with Calgary, amassing 66 goals and 179 assists for 245 points, along with 466 penalty minutes in 510 games.

Last season, he was named to the NHL All-Star Game and was a finalist for the NHL’s Foundation Player Award.
