Local hockey referee clinics now open for upcoming season

If you constantly criticize hockey referees, now is your chance to step in their skates.

Clinics are now open for this season for Calgary and area.

Central Zone Referees Committee Director Rikki-Lee Gavin told 660 NEWS that new officials need to take a program with Hockey Canada called E-Learning before attending a one-day clinic.

“They will learn a lot of the rules and a lot of the things that new officials will be nervous about,” Gavin said, “Like where to stand, or how to deal with conflict. There is also a one hour ice session where we’ll actually go out on the ice and learn officiating skills.”

They will understand basic rule knowledge and positioning.

“People who just watch hockey don’t even notice the referees, especially if they are doing a good job. It’s also really important that our officials hear the same messages, so that we all have the same standard of play, especially for some of the biggest calls like check from behind or check to the head.”

Gavin added that along with taking the course, referees will need a helmet with visor, skates, black track pants and a whistle.
