Young superheroes and athletes lace up for Nathan O’Brien Decathlon

The face paint and uniforms at a high-profile fundraiser west of Calgary are bit more extravagant than someone would expect from the typical sports crowd.

The excitement has been building for weeks for the inaugural Nathan O’Brien Superhero Sports Decathlon.

The two-day festival style event at Springbank’s Park for All Seasons supports KidzFirst and will see about 200 young superhero athletes participate over the weekend.

The parents of Nathan O’Brien, whose memory lives on in this superhero-themed festival, say two things he really loved were hockey, and dressing up as a superhero.

Greg Head, a neighbour and representative of the foundation, told 660 NEWS, the event came out of a desire to make a positive impact on a community that grieved with the family after last summer’s disappearance.

“For Nathan’s parents, this is so meaningful because it allows them to channel their energy to something positive,” Head said. “I think at the end of the day that is one of the most important things for the foundation.”

Kids ages five to 12 compete in superhero-themed teams in several different sports, and also have the opportunity to learn tips from experts throughout the weekend.

A silent auction and appearances from superheroes and celebrities are all part of the festivities.
