Rio Olympics now just a year away

The 2016 Olympics in Rio is now just 365 days away.

The preparation is well underway for athletes around the world. Ten thousand of them are expected to head to Brazil next summer, representing 206 countries.

There will be two new sports at Rio: golf and rugby, for a total of 28 and 41 disciplines.

Canada will be looking to improve on the 18 medals won in 2012. In London, Canadian athletes came home with one gold, five silver and 12 bronze.

Next summer, Canada’s Athlete Excellence Fund will pay gold medal winners $50,000, silver $20,000 and $10,000 for bronze.

“The Olympic Games is the most world-class multisport competition in the world and today is the beginning of the one-year countdown to Rio 2016. After coming off such a successful Pan Am Games, the Canadian Olympic Committee is excited to now look ahead to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Rio is going to be phenomenal and I applaud all of the hard work being done by the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee to prepare for what I know is going to be a world-class Games. To all of the Canadian Rio hopefuls and to those who have already qualified, the Canadian Olympic Committee is behind you every step of the way as you prepare for next year.”

– Marcel Aubut, President, Canadian Olympic Committee
