Crashes down over long weekend on Alberta highways

The number of crashes on highways and rural roads across the province were down this long weekend compared to last year, but more people were hurt.

RCMP say there were 264 collisions from Friday through Monday, down from 304 in 2014. However, there were 45 injury crashes compared to 43 last year.

They say three people died over the weekend, which is the same amount as 2014.

So far, five people have been arrested or charged in crashes that injured or killed someone.

Cpl. Hal Turnbull told 660 NEWS, we need to do a better job at making our roads safe.

“I’m glad to see the overall trend in accidents was down this past holiday weekend,” he said. “I’m hoping that’ll continue as we move into the Thanksgiving weekend and Christmas holidays. I’m hoping that throughout this year, we’re going to see a downward trend with each long weekend.”

The number of drunk driving offences is still being calculated.
