‘Urban oasis’ to be unveiled at St. Patrick’s Island

A tobogganing hill in the middle of the Bow River is just one of many features being set up for Friday’s opening of St. Patrick’s Island.

The area between East Village and Bridgeland has been closed for more than two years of renovations.

Neil MacKimmie, senior development manager for Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, told City News the island, across the Bow from Fort Calgary, is an “urban oasis.”

“We’ve also added a little beach at the west end to try and satisfy the public’s request that they be actually more actively engage with the Bow River, and actually get their toes in the water. It should be a great little area for wading and actually enjoying a hot summer day,” he said.

Other new island amenities include a multi-use plaza, picnic grove with barbeques, and a wetland
