Census results out with Calgary continuing to grow at near record pace

The latest census data is out, and it was the third highest population growth in Calgary’s history.

Between April 2014 and April 2015, 24,000 more people moved to the city than moved away.

The population grew by 35,271, up 3 per cent over the previous year.

The total population is now at 1,230,915.

At the community level, Evanston (2,853) is this year’s leader in growth, followed by Mahogany (2,300), Auburn Bay (2,064), and Cranston (1,831).

Other communities with growth over 1,000 include Copperfield (1,468), Saddle Ridge (1,219), Nolan Hill (1,173), Redstone (1,120) and Skyview Ranch (1,055).

This was the first year the city took census data online with more than 86,000 Calgarians taking advantage of the new system.

The city says accurate census information is essential in decision-making and planning for Calgary’s future needs.
