UK police in contact with Australian police over case of missing Madeleine McCann

LONDON – British police investigating the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann say they have been in touch with Australian authorities about the discovery of the body of a young girl in a suitcase there.

Metropolitan Police said Tuesday they are aware of the finding of the body and made inquiries about it.

Australian officials say there is no evidence the badly decomposed remains of a young girl are related to the McCann case.

The remains were found in a suitcase near Adelaide in South Australia. Police say the girl had been dead since 2007 or earlier. Authorities have not yet been able to identify her.

McCann was 3 when she went missing while on vacation in Portugal with her family. The case has never been solved.
