Food bank use continues to surpass the norm

The downturn in the economy is continuing to drive up the number of those needing help putting food on the table.

Shawna Ogston, spokesperson for the Calgary Food Bank told 660 NEWS they saw a major increase earlier this year and though the demand has dropped off a bit from that initial jolt, it is still higher than it was this time last year.

“The increase in clients is quite significant, we saw 23 per cent increase in new clients alone and then we saw things slow down a little bit and we weren’t any worse, we weren’t any better but we have seen more coming in at about 14 per cent in the last month,” Ogston said.

She said they want to stock up for September which is typically a tougher month for families experiencing back to school expenses.

A free concert to help the organization and the Veterans Food Bank goes this weekend at the Good Shepard Community Church.

The Caribbean Moravian Church Choir from the Virgin Islands will perform at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
