The Humboldt penguins at the Calgary Zoo have welcomed a new member to their colony.
The zoo announced Tuesday morning the hatching of its first Humboldt penguin chick to first time parents Reina and Javier.
Dr. Malu Celli said this hatch is a significant boost for their captive Humboldt population and it assures authorities they are getting one step closer to helping saving this important species.
Humboldt penguins are listed as vulnerable, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list.
