Calgary athlete returns from Pan Am games, thankful for the experience

A Calgary athlete is enjoying some rest and relaxation before hitting the cycle-track again.

Monique Sullivan, a three-time Pan Am gold medalist took a break from cycling after the 2012 London Olympics, but on an appearance on City’s Breakfast Television, said she loved being back on the track.

“I was just sort of burnt out and needed a break and then came back with a fresh perspective and sort of renewed gratitude for the whole sporting life,” Sullivan said on Monday’s program.

She had a very successful trip to Toronto, winning three gold medals, but said the titles haven’t sunk in yet.

“Not really actually. To actually pull it off at home when it really counted, that was awesome.”

“My family was there, which was amazing, so I got to give them a big hug right at the track,” Sullivan said. “I’ve never experienced that before, that was amazing. Then, we just came home, and honestly, we were so tired.”

She did make it out to see the mountains, but the next adventure is a well-deserved camping trip.

Training starts again Tuesday, as competition resumes in September.
